‘It’s Brilliant. Jack’s very proud he’s been chosen, he’s happy, enthusiastic, and keen to do a good job. Children get an awful lot of satisfaction from feeling they are being helpful and making a difference to the community – that’s what the scheme is all about - teaching the children how they can help’

‘The Estate is definitely much cleaner. There’s less litter and the kids have learned a great deal about themselves. McCauley loves it.

‘Being a Junior Warden has been a fantastic experience. It has helped them take ownership of their community and has highlighted their sense of caring for others.’

‘Danielle loves being a Junior Warden. She is so much more litter conscious and feels good that she’s doing something about cleaning up the area. These youngsters are our next generation; hopefully they are learning good habits which they will carry forward to their adult lives.’

‘Junior Community Wardens’ started work in Tangmere – linked with the school   - and Whyke both in 2006.

What was the idea?

Young people often get  bad name, being blamed for all sorts of trouble that goes on. Yes some youngsters are badly behaved but most aren’t and they really want to make things better. By giving them the chance to be  Junior Wardens they’d know what they were doing was important and valued. They could also pass on the message that  vandalism, graffiti and litter is not clever, but a real nuisance for everyone.

What Do Junior Wardens Do?

  • Identify environmental problems, like litter and vandalism.
  • Encourage their friends and family to look after the environment
  • Be proud of where they live
  • Take an active, hands-on role in protecting the areas in which the live helping make a better, safer community

What’s in it for Them?

  • Helping make things better for everybody
  • Learning new skills to help with your school work
  • Working with other young people on projects such as litter picks, tree planting etc or maybe working with old people who need help or company.
  • Group activities like Barbecues  and visits to places of interest as a thank you for their contribution.  Being a Junior Warden is hard work so in return they’ll receive regular rewards and treats based on how much effort they put in

And best of all Junior Wardens are helping to show that most young people are sensible and caring and only the minority cause nuisance.

‘Lauren can’t wait until its Wednesday. When she gets home she can’t stop talking about what they have been doing or where they have been. It’s definitely working. It’s making them more responsible for their environment and their behaviour.’
